FAIRification of External Data: Breaking down the Data Silos
P-D-R Workshop, London, 21st and 22nd May 2019

The emergence of FAIR principles has been gaining considerable traction across the pharmaceutical industry.  This is a direct response to the explosion of global data and the important part FAIR data plays in the application of Artificial Intelligence.

So, what is FAIR?

FAIR is an acronym for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

The Pharma-Documentation-Ring (P-D-R) held an exploratory cross-industry workshop on FAIR last month.   There was a tremendously diverse attendance at the workshop with over 75 people from 45 organisations.  These included academia, pharma and information vendors.

The attendees discovered how FAIR principles enable the effective re-use of critical data.  Much of the focus was on the participants taking home a greater understanding of the importance of FAIR and how it can be applied within their own organisations.

The delegates discussed and debated different aspects of FAIR including data standards, licensing and embracing new consumer trends

Two main areas emerged for further exploration.  These were sharing and integrating ontologies and adopting FAIR principles at the point data is generated

Feedback from the participants was extremely positive with an enthusiastic appetite for further momentum and growth of a connected, even more impactful FAIR Community.
